Best Dog Biscuits for a Healthy, Yummy Snack Time:
The first thing you need to do when your dog is hungry is feed him something tasty. You can’t just leave him out there all day waiting for you to come back from work or school. Dogs are social animals and they want to spend time with their owners, not being left alone in the house all day. They don’t like it if you’re busy doing other things while they’re eating!
Dogs have been known to eat anything – even rotten fruit and vegetables.
So what’s the best way to keep them happy?
You can buy a bag of dry dog biscuits at the store, but those are expensive and they don’t taste very good either. If you use canned dog food, it will spoil quickly and you’ll end up throwing away most of it because the flavor isn’t great enough.
If you really want to save money, you could make your own dog treat. There are many different ways to do it, so I’m going to show you how I make my own treats using ingredients that are readily available around the home. (And sometimes even in the grocery store!)
I’ve found that making my own treats is much cheaper than buying them. Plus, they last longer too!
Ingredients and Tools:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup nonfat dry milk
3 Tablespoons canola oil (or melted butter)
2/3 cup hot water (not boiling)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Utility knife (like a kitchen knife or exacto-knife) or a pizza cutter for cutting the biscuits
Baking sheet (cookie sheet)
Rolling pin (or a wine bottle)
Mixing and Kneading the Dough:
1. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients together very well.
(Whole wheat flour, nonfat dry milk, salt).
2. In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients (eggs, oil, vanilla extract, and water).
3. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until everything is mixed together.
4. Now you want to knead the dough for at least 5 minutes.
You can do this by hand, but it’s even better if you use a rolling pin. (I use a large wine bottle and roll it over the dough). The idea is to get all the ingredients mixed together really well.
5. After you’ve rolled out the dough, it should be very thin – almost transparent.
Cutting Out the Treats:
6. Now you get to have some fun!
Take your utility knife (or if you’re using a wine bottle, take the top off of that) and using quick and even strokes, cut the dough into strips. Try cutting the dough into different shapes as well – hearts, stars, or circles.
7. Once your biscuits are cut out, place them on a cookie sheet and put them in an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
8. Keep an eye on them.
They’re done when they’re golden brown. This should take about 10-15 minutes, depending on how thick your biscuits are.
That’s it! Now all you have to do is let them cool and then you can package them up and give them to your dog as a gift!
If your dog doesn’t care for the taste of these due to the wheat content, you can always soak them in some beef broth to help him get used to the taste!
Yields: About 2 dozen (2″) biscuits
