The first thing to remember when playing with a dog is that you need to keep your distance from it. You mustn’t make eye contact or even look at the dog directly. If you do so, then you will immediately get scared and start running away. Also, if the dog starts barking or growling at you, then run! But don’t go too far; just stay close enough so that the animal doesn’t chase after you.
If you have a small child, then you might want to take him/her into another room where there are no windows. That way the dog won’t see them. If not, then just hide under something while the dog is chasing you and wait until it goes away.
Then go back to hiding under something again and wait for it to leave. The best thing would be if the dog leaves without chasing after you!
When you are playing with a dog, it’s very important that you never let it sniff your face or any part of your body. Never touch the dog in anyway. Don’t try to pet the dog either.
Just don’t do anything that could cause the dog to bite you. If you get bitten, then it’s OK as long as it doesn’t break the skin. If the dog does break the skin, then you might want to go to the hospital and get a shot or something to prevent rabies. I hope that never happens to you!
You also must remember not to stare at the dog, especially straight in the eye. You don’t want to do that because it may see that as a threat or challenge. A dog sees that as a sign of dominance.
When the dog is eating, then stay away from it. It may accidentally bite your hand if it feels threatened. Also don’t bother it when it is sleeping or guarding its food or toys.
Leave it alone when it is in heat or sick too. If you do, then the dog might feel scared and attack out of self-defense.
It’s OK to talk, laugh, or make noise while you are playing with a dog. Just don’t do it excessively because then it will get bored and find something else to do. Dogs don’t like being bored, so keep it entertained at all times.
Make sure you always have something for the dog to chew on, whether that be your old shoe or a brand new chew toy. Also remember to praise the animal every time it does something good.
When you are playing with a dog, it’s OK if you want to play hide-and-seek with it. Just make sure that it always finds you within 10-15 seconds. If not, then the dog may become bored or upset because it can’t find you.
When playing with a dog in the water, try to stay away from deep water because a dog may accidentally knock you over and unintentionally drown you!
When the dog is playing with another animal or person, then make sure you aren’t getting in the way. The dog may accidentally bump into you or even knock you over, which could cause you to fall and hit your head on something hard. If this happens, then you could die or even break a bone!
If another animal or person is getting in the way while the dog is playing, then it may cause the dog to get distracted and possibly scared too. Always make sure that everyone is enjoying the activity and having fun.
When you are out in public with your dog, always keep a tight grip on its leash. This way the dog won’t be able to run away or get into trouble by running after someone else. If the dog is pulling on the leash too much, then stop walking and don’t continue until it calms down.
Never let the dog walk in front of you. It is always best to walk directly beside it or slightly behind so you can have full control.
Puppies always like to chew on things. If you don’t want it to chew on your new shoes, then take them away from it every once in a while and give it a chew toy instead. Chew toys can be bought at most pet stores.
If you want to teach your dog some fun tricks, then that is OK too. Just be sure to always have patience with it.
If you want to teach your dog how to fetch, then you should be patient and throw the ball slowly at first and then gradually increase the speed. If you throw the ball to hard at it when you first start, then it won’t know what to do. After a few tries, it will understand.
Playing dead is easy. Just fall to the ground and stay still like you’re dead. Your dog may be confused at first, but if you do it right, then it should get the hint after a few tries.
Give your dog a bath only when necessary. Too many baths will wash away the natural oils in its fur and skin, which will cause it to dry out. Use a gentle dog shampoo.
And make sure the water is neither too hot nor too cold! Warm water is best.
Never get a puppy if you are very busy most of the time or don’t have the time to spend with it. Also, always be aware that dogs can sense when you are sad from a great distance. If you are feeling sad, then it may upset your dog too and it may not behave in the way that you’d like it to.
After all, as its master, your emotions affect it in a big way!
If you have more than one dog in the house, then it is best to get two of the same kind. Not only will they have each other to keep them company when you are not at home, but they will also play with each other more often and get along a lot better too. Also, if you ever lose one of your dogs, then it’ll be easier to find a new replacement of the same breed.
Take your dog to the veterinarian regularly. This is very important in making sure that your dog stays healthy. If you start to notice any health problems starting to occur, then it is best to catch them early on before they become worse.
Getting a regular check up for your dog when it is still a puppy will help you establish a relationship with a veterinarian located near your home, which will make things a lot easier in case of an emergency.
Always feed your dog quality food. It may cost more than mass produced food found at grocery stores, but it is always worth the extra money in the long run. Not only will your dog stay healthy, but it will also help prevent it from making those all too familiar begging cries at mealtimes.
When playing with your dog, it is best to do so in a wide open space where nothing is easily breakable and nothing will get knocked over accidentally. Always make sure to pick up after your dog.
You wouldn’t want it to eat something and get sick, would you?
Keep your dog on a leash when going for walks. Not only is this for its own safety, but it is also for the safety of others as well. Some people are afraid of dogs, and a dog that is running free might leap out and bite someone if it is frightened or feeling territorial. Most importantly, it is illegal in most areas to let your dog run loose through the streets.
Always try to keep your dog’s coat clean and free of any fleas. If you start to notice any of these problems, be sure to contact your veterinarian about it right away so that he or she may treat it and so that you may avoid a larger problem in the future.
It can be very hard to train a dog, especially when you are very busy. The best way to train your dog is by setting aside an hour every day for training. Always make sure to stay calm and assertive, but not aggressive.
Be very careful not to get too excited or 13 and you may accidentally teach your dog to be scared of you.
As with all children, your new puppy will need lots of attention and care. Always be aware of where it is and what it is doing. Keep furniture picked up so that the dog doesn’t chew on something that will hurt him if he swallows it.
Keeping your dog well trained and happy will require some dedication on your part in the beginning, but you’ll soon find that it is a very small price to pay when you see just how cheerful and loving your dog is around the house!
Always keep your dog’s safety in mind. If you do not know how to properly handle an injury or if you see something wrong with your dog, it is best that you take him to a veterinarian right away. There are many common dog diseases and injuries that you may be able to handle on your own, but for those that you are unsure of, it is always best to seek the help of a professional.
Always have your dog’s vaccinations up to date. This is something that your veterinarian can give you advice on, but usually it is a series of four or five shots that your dog will need in order to stay safe from common diseases and illnesses.
If you have male dog, you should consider having him neutered. Not only will this prevent him from breeding (which can cause all sorts of issues), but it can also help prevent certain types of cancer as well. Speak to your veterinarian about the best time to do this.
It can be very tempting to give your dog people food from the table, but this is something that you should not do. Not only can the food be bad for your dog’s health, it won’t be treated properly. Always make sure to give your dog a meal that you’ve prepared specifically for him.
You should make sure that your dog is always wearing his tags. This is especially important if you live somewhere that has a high crime rate. If your dog does happen to escape, whoever finds him will be able to return him to you.
You should be sure to contact your vet immediately if your dog begins to act violently for no apparent reason. While it is true that dogs can sometimes snap for no reason, there are other times when there is an underlying reason. Your dog may have a behavioral problem that needs to be treated.
If you have to board your dog, talk to the people at the kennel and find out exactly what they feed them. You can even ask if you can see their kitchen. Some places cut costs by feeding cheap food or even table scraps.
This can cause several health problems for your dog so insist that only food meant for a dog be given to yours.
Your dog needs exercise and lots of it! Every day, try taking your dog to a park where he can run around and play. If you are busy, you can always enlist the help of a dog walker, or if you prefer you can create a small area for him in your yard.
Keep in mind that if fencing isn’t an option, you will either need to walk your dog on a leash or constantly keep an eye on him so that he doesn’t try to escape outside the boundary of your yard.
Before you get a dog, consider the size of your home and your daily routine. Some breeds thrive in smaller environments, like an apartment, but need a great deal more exercise than a larger dog. Large dogs need a lot of space to run around, and need plenty of time spent outside.
If you live in a small home with a tiny yard, a large dog probably isn’t for you.
You should look into pet insurance. This is something that can help you cut back on costs if your dog gets sick or injured. While you may be reluctant to shell out extra money for something that might not be needed, having your pet get sick or injured without insurance could be an even bigger burden on your finances!
It can be very easy to love your dog and take his health for granted at the same time. If you take time to educate yourself on how to properly care for your dog’s health, you can avoid unexpected problems in the future. Your dog will love you for it.
If you own a dog, and have a fence around your yard, or anywhere that he can’t just run away from you, make sure to block off any holes under the fence. If you have a digger, they will most likely find some way under the fence within the first day of being in their new home. This can lead to many problems for you because if the dog gets out, it will not know how to get back home.
